A North Carolina-based dentist with more than 25 years of experience, Dr. Maxwell Gilliam offers services in restorative and preventive care dentistry. In addition to seeing patients at his practice in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Dr. Maxwell Gilliam provides free dental services to individuals through the North Carolina Dental Society's Missions of Mercy (MOM) clinic program.

Established in 2008, the MOM program brings free dental clinics to North Carolina communities for a two-day period in which adults from underserved households receive the dental treatment they require. Eligible patients, some of whom have never received dental treatment, undergo procedures such as fillings or extractions and receive education on proper oral hygiene. They are also given supplies to help maintain good oral health.

These clinics are staffed entirely by volunteers, from dentists and dental hygienists to lab technicians and other health professionals. Depending on the number of volunteers and amount of funding, as many as 3,000 patients can be treated at a MOM clinic. More than 65,000 patients have been treated since the program's creation, accounting for more than $35 million worth of dental services. The next MOM clinic is scheduled for March 27 and 28 at First Baptist Church in High Point, North Carolina.
